Gary R. Garretson is a native of Streator, Illinois, graduating from Streator Township High School in 1970. He resides in Morris, Illinois with his wife and four children. In 1974 he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois . In 1977 he obtained his Juris Doctorate of Law from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. From 1977 to 1979 he was employed by the Illinois Appellate Defender's Office (Ottawa, Illinois) doing Criminal Defense Appeals before the Third District Appellate Court at Ottawa, Illinois and before the Illinois Supreme Court in Springfield. During that time he wrote over twenty-five (25) Appellate Court briefs on behalf of indigent criminal defendants in cases ranging from Criminal Damage to Property to Murder, In 1979 he became an Assistant State's Attorney in the LaSalle County, Illinois State's Attorney's Office's Felony Division. There he was responsible for the prosecution of felony criminal offenses in LaSalle County. From 1979 to 1981 he tried felony jury trials and was responsible for pre-trial hearings and Grand Jury presentations. In 1981 Mr. Garretson was promoted to First Assistant State's Attorney. In that position, in addition to his responsibilities for felony prosecutions, he was responsible for the day to day supervision of all other criminal prosecution divisions in the office. He reported directly to the State's Attorney for those duties. In 1987 he transferred from the Felony Division to the Civil Division of the office. There, while maintaining supervisory duties over the Criminal Divisions, he was responsible for all of the civil litigation work for the office, including acting as County Board Attorney and County Environmental Counsel. From 1979 to the present, he tried over seventy (70) felony jury trials involving Drug Prosecutions, Rape, Burglary, Arson, Murder, and Murder involving the Death Penalty. In 1988 Mr. Garretson went into private practice in Morris, Illinois where he maintains an active Criminal Defense and Civil Litigation practice, having defended several homicide cases, and other serious felony and misdemeanor cases, including numerous DUI cases. He is certified as a member of the Illinois Capital Litigation Bar and is currently an Assistant Public Defender for Grundy County, with responsibility for representing juveniles charged with crimes and acting as Guardian ad litem for neglected, abused, and dependent minors. Mr. Garretson is also active in the practice of Bankruptcy Law and Family (Divorce) Law. He is licensed to practice in all courts of the State of Illinois and in the U.S. District Courts, Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, where he is a member of the Northern District's trial bar and the Bankruptcy bars and a member the United States Supreme Court bar. _________________________________________________________ James M. Durkee recently graduated from the Northern Illinois University College of Law in May of 2008, and successfully passed the Illinois Bar Examination in July of this year. Jim was raised in Morris. His parents are Debbie Durkee and Michael Durkee, both lifelong residents of Morris. He received his primary education at Franklin, Center and Shabbona schools. Jim participated in community sports such as baseball and basketball. He graduated from Morris Community High School in 2000. While at MCHS Jim spent four years in both marching band and concert band. After graduating from MCHS he went on to receive his B.A. in Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2005. Since 2005 and while in law school, Jim worked summers for the Grundy County State’s Attorney’s office, assigned to traffic and misdemeanor cases. He will be licensed to practice before the Illinois Supreme Court, and all courts of the State of Illinois, the United States District Courts for Northern District of Illinois and Central District of Illinois and Northern and Central District Bankruptcy Courts.
